Location Context
My Job
Is to make and help manage what goes on the LED wall. The design team's goal is to captivate, educate and entertain the RIT community through a world-class visual experience.
SHED Opening Ceremony Thank You's
The very first project I worked on was creating motion thank you videos that would be played on the wall during the ribbon cutting ceremony.
Event attendees included the president of RIT, the deans of all 9 colleges, numerous donors who helped fund millions of dollars, and notable faculty and community members.
Accepted Student Open Houses
This project was for multiple RIT Open Houses where accepted students and their families were invited to RIT to explore campus through a wide range of events and activities.
Interactive RIT Trivia Game
This was a solo project I produced for the wall. With the goal of trying to turn the wall into something more, I thought what better way to get students active than trivia.
Because the team did not have a developer, I had to find a way that I could make this work that was easy and cheap. I really wanted to have the trivia be one continuous game, so that it didn't matter when the trivia was on the screen, anyone could join the same game.
My solution was to use Google Forms as the trivia, and use Google Sheets to do the calculations and make the leaderboard. This worked, was free and helped create a proof of concept.
Teamwork
This job has been a lot of fun, and continues to give me learning opportunities everyday. Learning how to work more efficiently as a team, and communicating clearly has been very helpful. While I have worked in groups before, this was good experience because it is a professional environment. There is a noticeable difference between a school project group and work based project.
Unique Dimensions
My biggest takeaway was designing for the dimensions of this screen. Most of my life, everything I worked on had been 1920x1080, 1080x1920 or 1:1. Because the screen was 3072×3584, and so large, I had to find new ways to align and order things. I also had to play closer attention to fine details because even the slightest error would be blown up and highly noticeable on the big screen. The unique dimensions and size of this screen have helped me become a more versatile designer.
Experience
Obviously this job was also really cool, being able to make something and see it up on a big screen the next day is amazing. I'm extremely grateful for being able to have this opportunity and I look forward to being able to put what I have learned into my future.
