Blitz Bowl Sports Promotion
Project Overview
Visual Asset Process
Sketches
Aside from sports and 2D motion focus, I had very little direction on this project. I decided to take two NFL teams and have them face off in a championship game for a made up trophy, and the project would be a promotion featuring each team and the final game.
Some rough testing of words to see which letters were more visually appealing when stretched out.
Team Introductions
I began this project by focusing on creating my main scenes, so that I could get them to the high quality I wanted, and use that as my foundation going forward. Jumping around between my main scenes also allowed me solidify the style before creating supporting media and transitions.
The first scene was introducing the teams through jump cuts.
Quarterbacks
Since quarterbacks are often the focal point of a team, I incorporated some 3D elements to make their scenes stand out and symbolize their importance.
Trophy
One of the few 3D assets in this project, I had multiple iterations of trophy design. I worked on different ways to reveal the trophy in Cinema 4D such as liquid morphing and vertex displacement, however these led to extended render times and files over 50gb.
Currently, I have camera movements to show the trophy. I am currently working towards achieving my original idea through After Effects rather than Cinema 4D.
Final Scene
When I began working on this scene, I had most of the project completed. I knew I wanted to bring everything together and present a strong, detailed closure. I thought that the cliche 'floating heads' approach would be a good direction, since I had featured images of players throughout the piece, and it would give me a lot of detail.
I tried different ideas before landing on the last one.
The main components of this scene are the players, which help build the scene with continuous motion.
I created my own wipe animations to reveal the players. Each player was revealed sequentially, and this process is shown in the video on the right.
Takeaways
I have always been intrigued by the impact sports have on design and culture. I believe that sports serve as a driving force for innovation and creativity, constantly pushing the boundaries and shaping our culture everyday. The combination of sports and design is one of the reasons I became a designer in the first place, so I am super happy to finally have created my own project.
This project helped me learn a lot about typography, and using it to create movement. I pushed myself to create high detailed visuals regardless of how long they would be shown. I focused a lot on making everything cohesive with style and repetition, but also connecting each scene together, and this really helped the piece flow. Deciding to focus on specific elements, and making them really strong is what brings the project all together.
I had a ton of fun working on this, and hope to have the opportunity to do more sports work in the future.
